About Mommy Makeover
Mommy Makeover is a plastic surgery trend that refers to one of the most popular combination of surgical techniques to restore women´s body appearance after pregnancy and breastfeeding – usually specific body areas such as breasts, abdomen and in some cases the genital area.
Mommy Makeover is a growing trend and its popularity is due to the fact that there are no set components or “strict rules”. Each Mommy Makeover is totally tailormade to fit each patient individual needs. Most Mommy Makeovers include an abdominoplasty (with or without liposuction), a breast surgery and may include other surgery approaches as necessary.

POST-BABY BODY
What Mommy Makeover can correct?
Most Mommy Makeovers treat a combination of breast and abdomen related concerns such as:
- Saggy, droopy and deflated breasts.
- Overly large breasts.
- Reduced size breast following breastfeeding.
- Excess fat on the abdominal and other body areas.
- Loose and saggy abdominal skin.
- Stretched abdominal muscles (diastasis recti).

PROCEDURES
What is included in a Mommy Makeover?
The goal of a Mommy Makeover is to restore women´s body shape and appearance after having children. Each Mommy Makeover is different according the changes the body has suffered and the severity of those changes. However, the most common procedures in a Mommy Makeover are:
Breast Augmentation: hormonal changes and milk production during pregnancy cause breast tissue to grow and stretch. When a woman finishes breastfeeding and goes back to normal weight, very often breasts become less dense and empty. Most women´s breast not only shrink but actually look smaller than they were before they got pregnant. A post-pregnancy breast augmentation is a very popular procedure to restore volume and perkiness to the breasts.
Breast lift (Mastopexy): breast lift is the most popular procedure among post-pregnancy breast surgeries. Pregnancy and breast feeding can leave women with saggy and asymmetrical breasts, less volume, drooping nipples and enlarged areolas. In these cases, a breast augmentation itself would not be a solution as it would not correct sagginess and other changes. A breast lift would correct these changes and return a more youthful appearance. Breast lift can be perfumed with implants (if your breasts are very empty or you wish to increase size) or without implants (if you have enough breast tissue and no not wish to increase size).
Breast reduction: most women experience breast size increase and fulness during pregnancy and size decrease after breastfeeding. However, for many women, breasts remain larger than desired and they don’t feel comfortable with it. Women usually seek post-pregnancy breast reduction to achieve the size they had before becoming pregnant or even smaller (if they already had big size breasts). In addition to the aesthetic improvements, breast reduction can relieve back and neck pain, rashes, bra grooves, posture problems and improve self-esteem.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck): during pregnancy the abdominal muscles will stretch along with the skin to allow the baby to grow. In most cases, muscles don’t totally go back to its initial position and remain separated (diastasis) and skin is not able to retract. Abdominal diastasis, together with excess fat and loose skin gives the abdomen around a flabby appearance. A post-pregnancy tummy tuck will tighten separated ab muscles, remove excess fat and skin and contour the entire abdomen.
Liposuction: during pregnancy there are significant hormonal changes that affect body functions including increasing in body fat. Most women find it difficult to restore their pre-pregnancy figure and local fat remains even with all efforts with physical activity and a balanced diet. Liposuction is usually part of a tummy tuck but it´s also performed in other body areas such as tights, hips, back, arms, neck and other body areas.
Vaginoplasty (vagina tightening): during childbirth, the pelvic muscles get stretched and the vaginal muscles loosen. One of the most common complaints new mums hear from their partners is that their vagina is too loose which interferes with their intimate life. Post-childbirth tightening surgery aims to “tighten up” muscles that became slack or loose from vaginal childbirth or natural aging process.
Labiaplasty: during pregnancy hormonal changes can also affect the intimate area appearance. Labia majora and minora may become swollen, increase in size and become darker. After pregnancy and breastfeeding labia can go back to its initial appearance but very often it remains bigger than before pregnancy (specially labia minora). Labiaplasty, also known as labia reduction surgery, is the most commonly performed vaginal rejuvenation procedure which reduces the length of labia minora, improving pain and discomfort on daily activities and intercourse.
Mommy Makeover is mostly directed to the breasts, abdominal and genital area but very often is combined with other body contouring procedures such as fat grafting, buttock enhancement, tight lift, arm lift and other procedures.

PREPARATION
Getting ready for a Mommy Makeover
Mommy Makeover preparations starts with a medical consultation were all your concerns will be addressed and your plastic surgeon will design a tailormade Mommy Makeover plan for you and will discuss your overall health and any medical conditions. Surgery it´s an important decision and you should prepare in advance, so all the process runs smoothly. See some tips to get ready for your surgery.
- Get lab tests and any exams prescribed by your plastic surgeon. Make sure you get this done at least one month in advance.
- Inform you plastic surgeon of any medication you take – you may need some adjustments.
- Do not take any medication which may increase the risk of bleeding.
- Stop smoking a few weeks before surgery and until the healing process is complete.
- Fill your prescriptions ahead of time so you have what you need when you get home.
- Stock up home and food essentials – including baby items, easy to cook meals and other daily life essentials.
- Home preparation: if you don’t have a housewife prepare your home and leave it clean.
- Recruit help: Get organized so that you can get picked up at the clinic once you have been discharged. Get someone to help you at home for the first and second week, especially if you have young children.

RECOVERY PROCESS
Mommy Makeover recovery
Mommy Makeover recovery can be different from person to person and will also depend on the combination of procedures you had. However, this is what you can expect from recovery (week by week):
First week:
The first week will be the most “difficult” part of recovery as your body is responding to the trauma and changes that suddenly occurred. You will experience tiredness, drowsiness, swelling, bruising and difficulty in standing straight. Listen to your body and only do what it allows you to do. Rest as much as you can but try doing short walks at home to keep your blood flowing. Have your partner, family or friends handle your house chores, looking after the children, etc. Prescribed medication will help you overcome discomfort. When you wake up from the surgery, you will feel tired and drowsy. The first 3 days are the most uncomfortable ones and you will experience swelling, bruising and the feeling of a “pulled” abdomen. It is very common for patients to be unable to stand straight, tending to have a curved posture. Take the prescribed medication to help relieve the common discomfort or pain at this stage.
2 weeks after:
After 2 weeks, most severe postoperative symptoms will subside, but it is normal to still experience fatigue, swelling and discomfort. Most patients can drive and go for short walks. You can also work in the comfort of your house, but you may need an extra week to go back to work. Patients with physical jobs may need around 4 weeks recovery.
3 weeks after:
At this point you will feel be an energy increase but take it easy, you have been through surgery and your body is still healing. Many patients refer they get to the end of the day extremely tired so make sure you ask for help if you feel you need it. You may still be swollen and may experience discomfort, but you will see real improvements happening.
4 weeks after:
The 4th week is called the turning point. Patients start feeling more energetic and comfortable to start doing more activities. You can stop wearing compression garment and start using normal bras. Bruising and swelling should be almost gone so you will start enjoying the results – results will continue to improve with results expected after 3 to 6 months. Light exercising is safe, it is advisable to increase intensity gradually. Note you are still at an early recovery stage so be aware of how your body reacts and contact your plastic surgeon if you have any concern.

SCARS
Mommy Makeover scars
Mommy Makeover scars will depend on which procedures you are having. See below scars for the most common Mommy Makeover surgeries:
- Breast Augmentation: below the inframmamary fold or around the areola.
- Breast lift: periareolar, vertical or inverted T.
- Breast reduction: vertical or inverted T.
- Tummy tuck: below the bikini line and in the belly button.
- Liposuction: very small scars usually hidden in natural body folds and creases.
- Genital area: scars are hidden in the natural folds which will make them unnoticeable.
*After surgery scars usually look pink but with time, they become lighter and thinner. Your plastic surgeon will recommend you a specific cream to promote good healing.

RESULTS
Mommy Makeover results - What to expect?
At an early stage, the swelling may “hide” the real Mommy Makeover results. However, after 3 weeks, once you can fully stand up straight and most swelling has subsided, you will immediately notice that your abdomen is flatter and firmer, and your breasts are perkier and in proportion with the rest of your body. Many women refer that Mommy Makeover has totally changed their bodies and self-esteem and is often the turning point for a healthy and balanced life. The final result is expected after 3 to 6 months. Make sure you don’t miss your follow-up appointments and let your plastic surgeon know about any concerns you have.

FURTHER INFORMATION
Mommy Makeover – Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have a Mommy Makeover if I have not had a Child?
Mommy Makeover is a term used to define a combination of common procedures to treat women’s body following birth and breastfeeding. However, you can still be a candidate for breast and abdomen surgeries even if you have not had a child. Natural aging process and weight fluctuations can also cause issues in terms of stubborn fat, excess skin, and drooping breast tissue.
When is the earliest I can have surgery after having a baby?
Is best to wait after you have finished breast feeding and have gone back to your normal weight to perform a Mommy Makeover – most women undergo these surgeries 6 to 12 months after stopping breastfeeding. This way you will achieve best results for a restoration procedure.
I'm still trying to lose the baby weight. Am I recommended to proceed with surgery?
The timing to perform a Mommy Makeover can be different from patient to patient and can depend of the type of surgery you wish to perform. Procedures which involve skin removal and contouring should happen when you get to your ideal weight. If you perform surgery and continue to lose weight can lead to additional skin laxity and interfere with the result.
For how long will I need help at home after a Mommy Makeover?
Depending on which procedures you performed recovery can range from 1 to 3 weeks. Most patients go back to office jobs after 2 weeks. An extra hand at home to help with children and daily home chores is recommended for at least 2 weeks.
Can I have more children after a Mommy Makeover?
You can but is highly recommended to perform a Mommy Makeover when you are done with having children. Another pregnancy can change the appearance of your breasts and abdomen again and you may need to go through surgery once again.
I have a hernia. Can it be repaired during abdominoplasty procedure?
Belly button hernias are very common on patients who had various pregnancies. These hernias can be treated while your abdominoplasty is performed.
Is it safe to have multiple procedures at the same time?
Any surgical procedure has risks but when performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon it is safe to have them at the same time. Benefits of performing various procedures at the same time include: – only one recovery period, only one anaesthesia and lower costs than performing surgeries separately.
Can I include other procedure in my Mommy Makeover?
Yes, apart from abdomen and breast surgeries Dr. Zia can include other procedure such as liposuctions, buttock enhancement, arm and tight lift and others. During you Mommy Makeover consultation you should discuss the areas you wish to treat to decide the best treatment plan.
When can I go back to work (office jobs and jobs which require physical effort)?
Depending on the combination of procedures you got you may take more or less time to go back to work. Most patients go back to office jobs after 2 weeks. If your job requires strenuous activities it may take longer but you should discuss this during your Mommy Makeover consultation.
Will I be able to carry my baby soon after the procedure?
No. You will need time to recover and this is why is recommended to have someone helping you at home for the first 2 weeks specially if your children are still babies.
What's the cost of a Mommy Makeover?
The cost of a Mommy Makeover varies according to the combination of procedures. During your consultation with Dr. Zia, you will be given a quote based on the evaluated areas and treatment plan.
