An abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and reposition the abdominal wall muscles. Due to pregnancies and weight fluctuations, the abdominal muscles tend to stretch and, therefore, make the abdomen look rounder and prominent. In these situations, the skin often loses firmness and becomes saggy forming folds that abdominoplasty corrects. Abdominoplasty is often combined with a liposuction to eliminate excess fat – in this case is called lipoabdominoplasty.er contributes to the young and alert look.

|2 weeks to go back to work|
|Total rest for 24 horas; wear compression garment 24/7 for 4 weeks; take medication as prescribed; do not perform strenuous activities.|
TYPES OF ABDOMINOPLASTY
Mini Abdominoplasty V Abdominoplasty
Mini abdominoplasty: A mini abdominoplasty is indicated in cases of moderate skin looseness without abdominal diastasis. Mini abdominoplasty removes skin and excess fat in the lower abdomen (below the bellybutton), without the need to treat the abdominal wall muscles. In these cases, it is not neither necessary to remove skin above the navel nor treat the navel itself.
Abdominoplasty: An abdominoplasty is indicated for patients with more obvious skin looseness, excess fat and prominent abdomen due to diastasis; it removes excess fat and skin and repositions the muscles and belly button.
Who is a good candidate for abdominoplasty?
Good candidates for tummy tuck should be emotionally mature to understand their own motivations for undergoing this type of surgery. It is important to have realistic expectations and patients must be aware that the procedure aims improvement but not perfection. A patient with a higher fat ratio and very loose skin cannot expect the same result as a patient with an ideal weight and a better skin tone.
Ideal candidates for an abdominoplasty usually meet the following criteria:
- Women who have given birth and wish to restore the abdomen appearance (strengthen the abdominal wall and eliminate excess skin and fat).
- Patients who used to be obese and still have local fat and excess skin.
- Good overall health.
- Stable weight.
- Realistic expectations and being aware that an abdominoplasty will improve body contouring but won’t change genetic characteristics and physical structure.
DECIDING ON THE BEST PROCEDURE
Liposuction or abdominoplasty?
Combining abdominoplasty with liposuction is very common and patients often do not know which option is more appropriate for their specific case. An abdominoplasty and a liposuction are surgical procedures which aim to improve the appearance of the abdomen but there are significant differences between the two. While a liposuction is indicated for patients with localized fat and good skin elasticity, an abdominoplasty is indicated when there is excess fat, saggy skin and abdominal bulging (due to muscles stretching). If only a liposuction is performed on an abdominoplasty candidate, the result would be an abdomen with less fat but with more pronounced sagging. Nevertheless, an abdominoplasty and a liposuction are procedures that complement each other. Most patients who consider an abdominoplasty also have fat in the abdomen and other body areas, so a liposuction is also performed in the same procedure – a lipoabdominoplasty.
STEP BY STEP
Tummy Tuck – the surgery step by step
A tummy tuck takes between 2.5 and 4 hours and it´s performed in the following steps:
Step 1: Markings
Patient’s abdomen is marked. Photographs are taken before and after marking for medical records and comparing the before and after results.
Step 2: Anesthesia
General anaesthesia and medication are administrated for more comfort during the procedure.
Step 3 – Preparation
Skin around the abdomen is deeply disinfected, and blue wraps are placed to protect the area from external environment. The surgical spot will be totally sterilized.
Step 4 – Incisions
The size of the incision will depend on how much fat and skin needs to be removed but the incision is made above the bikini line. A second incision may be required to remove excess skin in the upper abdomen.
Step 5 – Skin lifting
Skin is lifted and abdominal muscles are put together.
Step 6 – Excess skin removal
Skin is pulled down and trimmed and then put together with the lower part of the skin (bikini line). A new opening for the belly button is also created.
Step 7 – Checking final results
Tummy tuck results are checked before taking the patient to the recovery room and wearing compression garment. The patient will stay in the recovery room for medical observation for 24 hours. Results will appear gradually as swelling and bruising subside. Final results are expected after at least 3-6 months.
Combining an abdominoplasty with other procedures
To achieve better results, an abdominoplasty is frequently combined with other surgical interventions when needed. Here are examples:
Liposuction: most abdominoplasties are combined with a liposuction of the abdominal area. However, excess fat can also be removed in other parts of the body such as the flanks, back, thighs, arms, neck, etc.
Buttock augmentation with fat transfer: it allows glute reshaping for a better body contour.
Breast surgeries: many patients who perform an abdominoplasty have also experienced changes in their breasts, particularly women who have given birth or who have lost a big amount of weight. Therefore, an abdominoplasty is often combined with breast lift or breast reduction. As far as male patients are concerned, it is very common to treat a gynecomastia by eliminating excess fat or breast tissue.
Arm and tight lifts: these are common procedures, especially in patients who used to be obese and have saggy skin in the abdomen and other body areas.
Scars are one of the issues that worries patients the most, but every surgery involves scars and abdominoplasty is no exception. Abdominoplasty scars are located below the bikini line and around the belly button. The scar size varies according to the amount of skin to be removed. It is similar to a C-section scar, but larger. However, over time, the scars become lighter and thinner.
Getting ready for an abdominoplasty
Any surgery requires preparation and it all starts with an appointment with your plastic surgeon for a detailed evaluation. During your consultation the following aspects will be addressed:
Medical history: your plastic surgeon should be informed of any health problems, medication you take regularly, allergies, among other issues that you may consider important.
Expectations: it is very important to share the results you are looking for. You can refer to some before and after examples, demonstrating what you intend to achieve. It is very important that you have realistic expectations as each case is unique and the outcome depends on the initial body problems and genetic characteristics. Your plastic surgeon will confirm if you are a good candidate for an abdominoplasty and what results you can expect.
Here are some recommendations to get ready for your abdominoplasty:
- Perform your medical tests according to your plastic surgeon instructions.
- Do not take any medication which may increase the risk of bleeding or make adjustments to the medication you already take (if needed and as prescribed by your doctor).
- Stop smoking a few weeks before surgery and until the healing process is complete.
- Get organized so that you can get picked up at the clinic once you have been discharged and have someone at home to help you in the first few days days, especially if you have young children.
The recovery time is one of the most frequent concerns of patients who undergo an abdominoplasty. Will it be painful? Can I drive afterwards? When can I go back to work or to the gym? These are common concerns and you should know what to expect so that you can prepare yourself better. Recovery time may also differ if you have an abdominoplasty or a mini- abdominoplasty and if it is combined with a liposuction or not. However, here is what you can expect:
First days after the surgery
When you wake up from the surgery, you will feel tired and drowsy. The first 3 days are the most uncomfortable ones and you will experience swelling, bruising and the feeling of a “pulled” abdomen. It is very common for patients to be unable to stand straight, tending to have a curved posture. Take the prescribed medication to help relieve the common discomfort or pain at this stage.
1/2 weeks after surgery
About 1 to 2 weeks after surgery, most postoperative symptoms will subside, but it is normal to still experience swelling and discomfort. Most patients are able to drive, socialize and perform light activities after 10 days. Returning to work is expected after about two weeks.
4/6 weeks after surgery
The real results begin to be noticeable about a month after surgery, when most of the swelling and bruising disappear. You can resume physical exercise but it is advisable to start gradually since you have been inactive for some time and your body has undergone a trauma. At this point, you can also stop wearing the compression garment.
Symptoms I can expect after an abdominoplasty
Most common symptoms following a tummy tuck include:
- Moderate pain in the treated and adjacent areas.
- Pain in the lower back.
- Accumulation of fluids.
- Numbness in the treated area.
Tips for a good recovery
Any surgery involves recovery time and care. However, it is important to plan the recovery and know what is important so that everything runs smoothly. Here are some tips for a more comfortable recovery:
- Take two weeks off work.
- Total rest for the first 24 hours and start with short walks around the house. Walking increases circulation and the flow of lymph fluid.
- Follow all medical instructions.
- Have someone to help you with the daily house chores.
- Always wear the compression garment .
- Take the prescribed medication.
- Do not smoke.
- Avoid medications which may increase the risk of bleeding.
- Do not miss follow-up appointments.
- Do not perform strenuous tasks.
- Follow a balanced diet and drink plenty of water.
Abdominoplasty results - What to expect?
At an early stage, the swelling may “hide” the real results. However, after 1 to 2 weeks, once you can fully stand up straight, you will immediately notice that your abdomen is flatter and firmer and proportional to the rest of the body. The results will become more visible as the recovery progresses. The final result is expected after 3 to 6 months. Do not miss the follow-up appointments and let your plastic surgeon know about any concerns you have.
Abdominoplasty risks and complications
An abdominoplasty is a complex surgery and, as such, it involves possible risks and complications:
- Anaesthesia risks.
- Seroma (fluid accumulation).
- Healing problems.
- Numbness in the treated area.
- Fat tissue necrosis.
- Thrombosis and pulmonary/cardiac complications.
- Internal puncture.
- Possibility of revision surgery.
To reduce the risk of complications, strictly follow all medical recommendations. Every risk and complication will be fully explained during your medical appointment.

Abdominoplasty – Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I should have a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck?
The tummy tuck approach will depend of your specific situation – how much fat and excess skin you have, how lose your skin is and if your muscles are stretched. If you have a small amount of fat and excess skin below the belly button and your abdominal muscles are not stretched, you may be a good candidate for mini tummy tuck. If you have more severe skin looseness and plenty of fat below and above the belly button and stretched muscles, then you may be a good candidate for a full tummy tuck. Only the plastic surgeon will be able to confirm the right approach after a medical evaluation.
How much pain will I have?
Pain levels are different from patient to patient depending on how invasive surgery was on your tolerance to pain. The first three days are the ones that you will feel more discomfort. After a week you will feel a big difference. Taking prescribed medication will help you reduce pain and discomfort.
Will I see visible scars after surgery?
Scars are part of surgery. Typically, an abdominoplasty scar looks like a C-section scar but bigger. Depending on the amount of skin to be removed the incision can be smaller or bigger – located on the bikini line. Scars usually fade away with time, but it also depends on your genetics.
My breast is also sagging. Can I combine tummy tuck with a breast surgery?
Yes. Many patients that perform an abdominoplasty combine surgery with a breast lift, breast reduction or breast augmentation. This concept is called “Mommy Makeover”, a combination of procedures to restore body appearance after pregnancy.
Will the results last?
Yes! As long as you follow a balanced diet and practice exercise to keep your weight stable over time the results Will be long lasting, and you may never need a second procedure.
Can I get pregnant again?
Abdominoplasty is not recommended if you still want to have more children. If you are considering getting pregnant again is advisable to wait. Pregnancy may change your body again and ruin surgery results.
Why do I need to use compression garments?
Compression garments are recommended specially after surgeries like liposuctions, tummy tucks or any other surgery that need skin retraction. Compression garments will help in the following aspects:
- Improve swelling.
- Improve blood flow.
- Helps achieve a better body contour.
- Promotes healing process .
- Applies pressure to skin that needs to attach and readapt to the new body contour.
Will my tummy tuck help with stretch marks?
Tummy tuck is not considered a treatment for stretch marks. However, it can help removing some depending on where stretch marks are located. A full abdominoplasty removes most of the skin in the lower abdomen, and any stretch marks in this zone will be removed along with the loose skin. Stretch marks outside of that zone or on the upper abdomen are not going to be removed.
